Let’s have another of those Craigslist challenges. This time I’m turning my attention to the very bottom end of the market. I was thinking about Deal Killer - Powered by Focus was searching for a cheap car for his son. The Nissan he was considering, despite the obvious safety issues, surely is cooler than a beater Camry with its unapologetic teal (hehe) and lack of plebian rear doors.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

But what is the cheapest car for sale near me that can truly be considered cool and is in good running condition? I set a cap of $2,500 and got searching.

I don't want to exclude you non American Oppos so whatever is the smallest amount of money possible on an online site is allowed. Gumtree or the List of Craig, it's all the same.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

2007 Saab 9-5 - $2,500

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Doesn’t leave much room for repairs but these weren’t too awful to keep running. Well dang, I’m really really tempted. This is one classy turbocharged manual rocketship of a premium saloon for way cheaper than I imagined. 160k miles isn’t too bad on this end of the car market.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And this Saab Sonnet doesn’t qualify but I like Saabs and it is also cheap.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Same story for this Diahatsu.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And this Protege would be very cool without catastrophic rod knock.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

But this Sentra SE-R could probably get a new manifold for under $2,500, but that would be breaking my own rules. Dang this is hard.

Well, I said cool and running, not reliable.

1995 BMW 318i convertible - $2,000

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I would not advise this at all. Those not entirely distasteful wheels say enough.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Wait a minute, never mind a post for another day.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Huh, maybe the least cool car I’ve come across, to the layman at least.

2000 Acura Integra - $2,000

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

One grand for every finely aged year. Doesn’t look too bad. I may have found a winner. Automatics aren’t exactly uncool except maybe in a car like this. What have you got?

Wow, so many people list a car with a 0 off the end.

Update: Strong contendor

2003 Nissan Pathfinder - $2,300

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Huh, way better than I would expect. I think they maybe just don’t know what they have. I remember almost buying a green one for nearly twice this.

I recently bought my first SAAB (a 1998 900 convertible) with the 2.0 version of that engine. According to the internet they really are pretty reliable as long as you keep after oil changes and make sure the PCV is happy. Have someone drop the oil pan and clean it out if there’s any sign of low oil pressure (sludge)

Also as I paid too much for mine, I’d say very NP at $2500

The first two are seriously cool, but the last too obvious. I very much like that 85 Lariat. The 3 series looks way cleaner on the outside than it has any right to. No interior pictures but it may match the condition of the exterior. Clearly garaged all the time.

Wait, are you Atlanta area?

Well, here’s an ‘05 Town Car with 226,000 miles for $2400 - should be good for a few 100k more. No sign of the usual peeling paint on the hood, either, so should clean up cosmetically.

Teal Tuesday is too fresh in my mind, and besides, I think the Jeep is cooler to the layman, if that’s the goal . The Mercedes is Oppo certified but not particularly enviable to most people, especially with that paint. Interior looks way too good, though that material would look the same 400,000 miles from now so it’s not really indicative.

Sure,  it’s a bit large, and slow, and likely terrible on gas, but come on. Classic semi tractor. Plop a bed on it, and you’ll be outdoing every brodozer. Nothing more trucky than an actual commercial truck. Plus, it’s got nice patina.

Beetles are the classic “so theoretically uncool that it’s actually cool and hip” cars. If you see someone driving one, you know it’s by choice. They are not ashamed of what they are doing. They are Beetle drivers and proud of it, and any insults will just bounce off of them. Because Beetle drivers are above that nonsense.

Well, with a truck like this, just think... Sure it’s a weird starting point for a project vehicle l, but an extremely flexible one. The engine bay is probably plenty large enough for whatever sane engine swaps you desire, while the exposed frame out back has all the room in the world for whatever engine or engines you want. Want a Detroit Diesel v12 or whatever? That’ll fit. A pair of twin turbocharged and supercharged LS v8s? No problem! A backward-facing secondary truck cab for no apparent reason? Sure!  Whatever it is, it will probably fit. Or you could just keep it in decent running condition and drive it all over the place just for the heck of it. Maybe strap a trunk to the back and use it as a grocery getter. You can do whatever you want in an old truck like this!

Don’t worry, I think most boomers are still too obsessed with muscle cars and ‘32 Fords to pay much attention to this thing. If I had more space and money, I’d probably want to convert this thing into a car hauler for junkyard rescues and whatnot. Maybe LS swap it just so it can keep up with traffic, but preserve the excellent patina. It’s a neat truck.

Swap the gutless engine, build a flatbed on the back, and watch the compliments roll in. Imagine that with a rollback bed. Maybe a little too short of a wheelbase but still. Eh, there is the odd unbranded one but mostly just Race Tracs and other well established ones. There is one station that literally doesn’t even have so much as a beer advertisement anywhere that I see no reason to investigate. I don’t remember them even having a permanent sign for their prices. If I recall some of the mom and pop convenience stores have really tiny Tom Thumb branding, which is what Kroger uses, also with nearly nonexistent branding.

Thank you for considering me in my quest for finding an inexpensive car for my son. As many, many, many people have pointed out, a ‘95 Nissan is not the safest car in the world. Duly noted. Several commenters have said I could find a newer, safer car for $2,000 or less. Let me state, that I’ve spent the past couple of hours scouring the internets, and haven’t found anything that would be a better alternative within an hours drive of my house. I am somewhat constrained in the size of the car, as I can’t street park a car where I live, as the street is too narrow, and I have limited parking on my drive-way. So, no to a big GM W-body car or something similar . I also have to be able to maintain this car, and show my son how to do simple repairs. So, as cool as a Saab or BMW might be, no way would I consider buying such a car. That late 90's to early 00's cars hit just the right sweet spot of being reliable, easy to maintain and having airbags and decent handling. It’ll be interesting to see what people come up with in their own local areas. Who knows, that Nissan might be a total shit show when I go look at it. At least it’s Teal. I love Teal. ;)

As always, it is so much harder in practice. It would have to be cheaper than that and have a full detail thrown in before I’d buy it, but I also live where lack of rust opens up so many more options. The color is indeed great. Ultimately, you want a car he can be proud of and a bright and cheerful uncommon old coupe does fit the bill. Combining cheap to run and cheap to buy is indeed quite hard and it looks like the panther platform is out of the picture, what I would otherwise suggest.

He could have had a turbocharged Saab, if you are willing to drive halfway across the country and break the bank, that is.

Too bad the Honda tax seems to keep old Civics from ever reaching that low.
